Customer Review: Chemical content causes headaches!

I bought this pot from Target to use at work. I like the stainless steel carafe, it won't break when I bang it in the sink, and it will cool down quickly with the heater off being single-walled. (I like coffee "any temperature but too hot"). It's just the right size for that afternoon pick-me-up.
I brought my own coffee and water from home (the water at work is from the muddy Mississippi and even in winter imparts an algal bloom taste to the water). I didn't use it frequently, maybe 2-3 times a week. I puzzled by my getting headaches at work. I rarely get a headache, and to get them 2-3 times a week I knew something was up. I suspected chemical exposures with my new job, but couldn't relate it to anything consistent with my work duties.
I did notice from the beginning that the pot imparts a distinct plastic off-gassing flavor to the coffee, and I would run 2-3 pots of water through it before making coffee, just to tone it down a bit. In fact I've probably run about 50 pots of water through it and a gallon of white vinegar, and even put baking soda in the water to get rid of the plastic flavor. It still tastes bad after all that. I left the brew basket in the dish washer to run it through several wash/heat cycles to accelerate the off-gassing to help it get over it.
Well, I started to pay attention and the coffee pot was the source of my headaches. I'd never heard of this, and doubted my conclusion from the evidence, so I brought the coffee and water jug home and made a pot with our home brewer and the plastic flavor wasn't there and neither was the headache. The next week I gave it one more chance and boom, another headache. I am totally convinced this coffee pot is dangerous to my health. Whether the metals or plastics used, something isn't right with it.
I looked at the box and the pot is made in China. With all the bad press on toxic products from China, I have to chalk-up coffee pots from China as being another item to avoid from that country. I'm not a nationalist basher of all things foreign, but I am now paying attention to countries of origin and trying to avoid Chinese products to preserve my health.
My wife is suffering from Multiple Myeloma and chemical exposures can be a cause for that. We don't know what caused her cancer, but if avoiding harmful chemicals can help avoid getting cancer, it's worth my time to write up a caution for others. Don't let this otherwise nice coffee pot be the source of your headaches. There's nothing more precious than your health!
