Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Mr. Coffee BVMC-PSTX91 Optimal Brew 10-Cup Thermal Coffeemaker, Black/Stainless SteelCustomer Review: A fine coffee maker for the frequent entertainer Summary: 5 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I've been a Keurig (one-cup) fan for a while. It's just a simpler way to make coffee, but if you're entertaining a bunch of people and they all want coffee, suddenly it's not so simple. A traditional coffee maker like the Mr.Coffee here is far better suited for that type of environment.
Now I don't claim to be any sort of coffee maker expert, but I am quite impressed with the Mr.Coffee. It's quick. It's simple. It makes up to 10 cups at once, and it's even a nice looking machine with all that stainless steel. There are other features that make it a great machine though. Let me just list them here:
- Quick. The description of the product boasts speed, and it's not lying.
- Quiet. The only way you know that it's making coffee is hearing the coffee drip into the pot.
- Quality. The carafe is heavily insulated. The coffee maker also knows when there's no water or when the carafe has been removed.
- Self cleaning. Yep. There's a self-cleaning switch which runs hot water through the machine. I imagine you could also use vinegar to clean out any scale build up.
- Simple. Load up your coffee. Fill up your water. Press brew and a few seconds later, it's ready to serve.
- Elegant. A nice looking machine also includes a gentle LCD for displaying time and other brew information. The power cord also tucks into a compartment on the back for aesthetic goodness.
- Other. It includes a felt water filter for filtering out particles in the water reservoir. That's nice, but not exactly something I'd be clamoring for. I use filtered water to start.
- Good coffee. Of course this is probably the most important. The thing makes good coffee using either their recommended amount of grounds or your own preference. Even making a small amount of coffee (2 cup minimum) it comes out delicious.
So it's a quality machine. I'm quite pleased. In this class of coffee makers, it's a major contender. But what's a review without a little criticism? Here's where this coffee maker and generally all in this class fail:
- Preparation. You need a coffee filter. You need ground coffee, and you have to measure the coffee to your liking. The book with this maker includes recommendations that I find pretty good, but you'll need to modify that to how strong or weak you like your coffee. Either way, it's more work than a Keurig where you just pop in a k-cup and go.
- Cleaning. When the coffee is brewed, you have to get in there and get that filter out. It can be drippy and messy (standard for this class of coffee makers). The water reservoir on this machine doesn't really lend well to a manual cleaning. You pretty much need to use your dishwasher. A Keurig doesn't really have that problem.
- Water filter. Sure the felt water filter is a nice feature, but it expires. you have to buy new ones every now and again. This maker includes a month tracker right on the coffee holder so you know when you need to change it, but it's the fact that you need to change it that is more maintenance.
- Quantity. This maker boasts 10 cups. That's good enough for about 4 people. Making the minimum amount of 2 cups is barely enough for one person.
So my criticisms are not harsh at all. It pretty much underscores what an excellent machine this is. Whether it's right for you is your call. I still prefer my Keurig most of the time, but this is a good machine to have around for parties and entertaining guests.
Description of Mr. Coffee BVMC-PSTX91 Optimal Brew 10-Cup Thermal Coffeemaker, Black/Stainless SteelWith its sleek modern design and stainless accents, this 10-cup thermal coffeemaker not only looks great on the kitchen counter but it also brews in less than eight minutes. Its stainless steel vacuum-insulated carafe keeps the last cup as hot and fresh-tasting as the first for hours. It also provides a comfortable-grip stay-cool handle and a drip-free spout for graceful serving. Even more, this programmable small appliance makes it possible to wake up to the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee or to have a pot ready and waiting to serve with dessert - no need to get up from the table half way through dinner. For those less-than-leisurely mornings or for those just a little less patient when it comes to enjoying that first sip, the coffeemaker's brew-pause function suspends the brewing cycle to allow for pouring a quick cup mid-brew. Other highlights include audible ready signals, a removable water reservoir, water filtration that removes 97 percent of chlorine from the water for better tasting coffee, a special cleaning cycle, and cord storage to keep counters looking tidy. The coffeemaker measures approximately 22-2/7 by 13-1/5 by 17 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.
